Santos Acquisitive Art Award 2012

The Concept
Santos, platinum sponsor of the Roma on Bungil Gallery, has committed $6,000 for the acquisition of an art work to be hung in the public space of the Community Arts Centre, which houses the gallery, library, studios and workshops.
The Community
Roma, a major town in the Maranoa region of southern Queensland, lies 500km west of Brisbane. Traditionally a large proportion of the population has had, either by birth or occupation, an involvement with the land and agricultural pursuits. (Roma is the largest livestock selling centre in the southern hemisphere.) More recently the town has also become a hub for the exploration and development of the rich natural gas reserves of the Surat basin, with Santos a major participant.
The Brief
Over the past decade, the Maranoa has experienced the extremes of both El Nino and La Nina weather cycles. As Roma rebuilds after the most recent flood event, the committee wants the 2012 Santos award to refocus the community’s attention on the benefits of La Nina – the abundance that follows the rain. The Santos Acquisitive Art Award for 2012 will go to a contemporary artwork on canvas in oils, acrylics or mixed media on the theme ‘La Nina – the bright side’.
Specifications
The unframed work will be on high quality stretched canvas and will be protected with 2 layers of archival grade sealant. It is to fit within a hanging area 2.3m (H) by 3m (W).
